Senator Flanagan – Support the Child Victims Act

An Open Letter to New York Educators

Like you, we are concerned with protecting children from sexual predators at school. The Child Victims Act is currently blocked by Senator John J. Flanagan even though it passed the Assembly(139-7) with near unanimous bi-partisan support. Last week the Governor also endorsed the bill.

As written, the Child Victims Act will provide child sex abuse victims with the time necessary to bring their abuser to justice. The law today protects sexual predators after the victim turns 23 years of age. As a result, our community and our school children face a threat from known sexual predators protected by major institutions.

An example of pedophiles in our neighborhoods

In Utica, a well-known priest is allowed to retire in good standing and mainstream into the community. For years, the Diocese of Syracuse misled the community. They refused to tell anyone that this priest had sexual abuse allegations that were found “credible”. The Child Victims Act will expose these predators for what they are – a threat to our children.

Senator Flanagan may be portraying the image as a loving family man. In reality, he is protecting the institutions that have a long history of protecting predators. There is no other way to say this. But, Senator Flanagan continues to protect pedophiles at the expense of our community.

I urge you to contact Senator Flanagan’s office. By doing so, your voice will tell him that his abuse of power is unacceptable. We also ask that you urge him to allow Senators to vote on the bill. As a result, we are confident that this bill will pass the Senate if a vote is allowed.
